Start: June 21, 2021
End: June 25, 2021

The 49th International Summer School-Conference “Advanced Problems in Mechanics” (APM) takes place at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University from June 21 to June 25. The main purpose of the conference is to solve the fundamental theoretical and applied problems of mechanics. This task is strategically important for the development of the whole scientific field of mechanics. That is why, year on year, the organizers create an efficient infrastructure for convenient cooperation of scientists, exchange of experience and knowledge.

The conference is traditionally organized by Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University together with the Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering RAS (IPME) with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Gazprom Neft PJSC. The organizing committee bases at the Higher School of Theoretical Mechanics of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, SPbPU. This year, the conference stands within the Year of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation.

The 49th APM conference will be held in a mixed format, as it was last fall. The Russian scientists will be able to attend the event in person (in the presence of a negative PCR test for COVID-19), and foreign scientists will join through video conference. In total, more than 200 scientists in the field of mechanics are expected to participate both in-person and online.

The conference program includes plenary lectures by leading mechanicians from Russia and all over the world, seven thematic mini-symposia, and ten scientific sections that cover various branches of mechanics, such as nano-, micro-, and mesomechanics, quantum mechanics, heat transfer and wave motion, fluid mechanics, solids and structures etc.

This year the APM will host two special events. In February 2021, the outstanding Russian researcher in the field of mechanics, applied mathematics, and engineering, Professor Ilya Israilevich BLEKHMAN, passed away. Professor BLEKHMAN was a recognized leader of the scientific school of vibrational mechanics. To honor Ilya Israilevich and to remember his scientific works, the scientific section “Vibration in Science and Technology” is organized.

The 49th conference “Advanced Problems in Mechanics” will cover not only scientific aspects of mechanics: at a special mini-symposium “Mechanics and Business” students and graduates of Polytechnic University, who started their own successful business in mechanics, will present cases and talk about how to monetize scientific ideas.
